Stop by CP's booth in the Culinary Village
For happy hour (if happy hour started at 2 p.m.), we’ll have shots of Virgil Kaine, David Szlam’s new ginger-flavored bourbon (read our story about it on p. 19). He’s expecting it to do for flavored bourbon what Firefly did for vodka. We’ll let you be the judge. Read moreCHSWFF 2012: the highs & lows

Virgil Kaine Bourbon & Ginger by T. Ballard Lesemann Staff Pick On the heels of Firefly Distillery's dabblings into sweet-tea bourbon and rum, entrepreneurs David Szlam and Jake Johnson (both vets of Cordavi) designed a new bourbon-based infusion called Virgil Kaine Bourbon & Ginger. It's a natural match: Great bourbon goes well with great ginger ale. Virgil Kaine is handcrafted in small batches using two-year-old bourbon from Kentucky and natural ginger, vanilla, and cinnamon flavors. It's light amber in color, and there's a bit of vanilla and citrus in the aroma with only a hint of ginger and oak. The first sip tastes sweeter than expected, and the ginger flavor comes through strongest in the finish. Try it mixed with a strong root beer, spicy Blenheim ginger ale, or a dash of carbonated water and cherries, lime, or mint. By LAIN BRADFORD Special to Lowcountry Life Published Wednesday, March 7, 2012 SPIRIT Virgil Kaine Bourbon and Ginger Whiskey, Charleston, 80 proof, $25, 750 ml It is always great to come across locally made products, and the Virgil Kaine is another one we can add to the line up that South Carolina can call its own. The ginger flavor and bourbon do have some similar characteristics, and with the plethora of flavored vodkas we will start to see more flavored gins, tequilas, bourbons and blends in the near future. The Virgil starts with a nose full of sweet, toasty oak and rich bourbon notes. All the classic bourbon flavors shine; soft, sweet dried fruit and nuttiness with a touch of honey is balanced perfectly with just the right touch of ginger. Each sip is a new and fresh drinking experience. It's terrific on the rocks or with a splash of soda and a twist. Read full article hereThe bourbon boom is all about the South - Rip-Roaring Spirit
If Julian Van Winkle is the high priest of bourbon, Charleston's David Szlam is something of an evangelist. He freely admits that his newly released Virgil Kaine Bourbon & Ginger is meant to win over those who might not consider themselves bourbon drinkers. It's not an easy mission. For years there's been a gulf in the world of spirits, what one might call the brown liquor/white liquor divide. On one side are the whiskey drinkers, who sip their bourbon or scotch straight and do little else with it. On the other are those who won't touch the brown stuff, preferring clear vodkas and light rums, often in sweet, highly flavored concoctions that are the antithesis of an aged bourbon on the rocks. Bourbon and ginger bottled up
Area partners craft ready-to-go drink By Teresa Taylor - Read article in Post and Courier hereEight months ago, when David Szlam and Jake Johnson were thinking about doing a gourmet taco food truck in Charleston, Szlam suddenly had a different idea. What about doing a spin on the classic Southern nectar, bourbon and ginger ale, but all in one bottle? And making it naturally infused? By the next morning, Szlam says, he had a "ready-to-go" product and already had drafted a design of the label on his computer. Now, he and Johnson and partner Ben Capa have brought that product to market. Ben Arnold recently became the distributor of Virgil Kaine's Bourbon and Ginger. It's Kentucky bourbon infused with real ginger and hints of vanilla. The "handcrafted" part -- infusion and bottling -- takes place in North Charleston. Read full article here
Dark liquor and strong beer at the Brick House ABC Fest
Early in their show at Brick House Kitchen on Sunday, someone passed a bottle of Virgil Kaine ginger bourbon to the Royal Tinfoil on stage. Unsure of the concoction at first ("I think it has ginger already in it?" frontwoman Lily Slay pondered from stage), the band soon embraced the whiskey ambrosia, even claiming to have written a song on the spot for the Kaine halfway through. By the end of their set, the bottle was half empty (or half full?), and the band had proclaimed themselves as "our local source for drunken gypsy sex." Read full article here
